I have always loved jewels…diamonds, emeralds, pearls,
sapphires, and rubies. I love them so
much that I try to find out how they are formed and harvest from the earth and
sea. In order to do this I had to buy
several books and take online courses to find out more about these
items. Most people think that gemology
is as boring as geology, but I find them similar in many ways. One is just as intriguing as the other. But I would rather study and talk to you
about the world of gemology and jewelry making. So pull up a sit, it’ll
be a learning process for all of us.
To start my quest
in gemstones, what better place to begin with than Tiffany & Co. I am sure many of you have seen the movie
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” if not view it on the web or Netflix. It is a movie that fascinates and makes you
laugh and question in our day and age, (since many people are unaware of Tiffany's) what is this Tiffany's and what do they serve. Tiffany serves up
delicate entrees of gemstones and …engravings… if you watch the movie.
In the 1830’s,
Tiffany & Co., was started by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young; with
a $1000 investment from Charles’ father.
And the rest as they say is history.
So many things have happened through the years but to keep it simple and
current, let’s just brush up on what’s going on at Tiffany’s right now.
What’s hot not at
Tiffany & Co. right now, is the Tiffany T. The company’s design director,
Francesca Amfitheatrof, has brought something, innovating to the design house
with bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, accenting the Tiffany T. She brings 20 years of experience to Tiffany
and has designed for the couture maisons, such as Chanel, Fendi, and Alice
Temperley. She has also designed
silverware and jewelry for Asprey & Garrard. Her list of accomplishments, go on and on.
“Born in New
York, Tiffany T is an icon born in a new era.
Amfitheatrof dedicates it to the world’s great cities and global
travelers who gravitate to art and culture—and the edge where creativity
sparks fly.” My interpretation of this
creation is a monogram used in the jewelry creations celebrating the Tiffany
tradition; and like the other creations at Tiffany, I am sure that the ‘T’ will leave
a memorable imprint and be as wonderful as past creations in Tiffany’s 177
years of jewelry making.
